Sex trafficked Iowa teen who killed her accused rapist ordered to pay his family $150K

A teenager who says she was sexually trafficked when she was 15, has been sentenced at the age of 17 to face five years of probation and pay restitution to the family of the 37-year-old man, Zachary Brooks, whom she says raped her multiple times before she fatally stabbed him. Pieper Lewis, who agreed to have her name used previously in stories about her case, said in a witness statement she had been a teenage runaway before she started living with a man who portrayed himself as her boyfriend and trafficked her for sex. At one point in May 2020, she said she was told she would have to stay with another man, Brooks, and have sex with him for offering her shelter. After multiple instances of rape, according to Lewis, she repeatedly stabbed the man in June 2020. She was arrested the day after the stabbing and was originally charged with first-degree murder, but later pleaded guilty last year to involuntary manslaughter and willful injury. Each carried a prison sentence of 10 years, but instead was ordered to pay the restitution, and serve probation and 600 hours of community service.
